Looking back in time, over the span of centuries up to the present day, every person, within the depths of his soul, aches at the loss of commun-ion with God in Paradise. Because of that, no man can truly rest while here on earth. One desires the fruit of the Fall; another awaits the resurrection of the dead; all are in search of finding our lost homeland - our communion with God.
The way of restoring that communion is what Elder Aimilianos desired to experientially impart in his talk Our Daily Report to God which he gave to students of the Polytechnical University of Xanthi, Greece, on 18 March 1984.
It is our hope that the inspired teaching of the Elder will encourage and strengthen the readers in their attempt to move nearer to God.

On Prayer – Problems and Temptations

The edition under the title ON PRAYER: Problems & Temptations puts into print the oral teaching of our revered Elder, Archimandrite Aimilianos, as addressed to the monks of the Holy Monastery of Simonos Petras1 on 29 November 1978.

In this catechetical work, Elder Aimilianos unlocks the door to the depths of our souls, in the sense that he reveals to us the causes that daily bring to our attention various problems in our prayer in general, and in particular, in the practice of the Jesus Prayer. It often happens that, not knowing what is really in our best interests, we are led to mistaken conclusions, and attribute the responsibility for this to ourselves, with the result that we discontinue our prayer. “No,” says the Elder, “we have only to strengthen our conviction that our prayer is exactly as it should be, that we are on the right road, and that it will draw grace in its wake.”

Knowing that prayer comprises the main task of us all, we express the wish that this edition will help to solve many of the problems that arise in its realisation.

This is the first booklet being published after the Elder’s repose on 9 May 2019 with an English translation of one of his homilies. The task of translating it was undertaken by the erudite professor emeritus of the English language and astute scholar of Ancient Greek, Dr. Richard Matthews. As we express our gratitude to him, it is our wish that he also will reap from the spiritual benefit that will be received by all those who will read this work.

А если это так, для каждого из нас надежда не потеряна, мы можем быть уверены в Господе. Мы предстоим распятому Господу, мы всегда находимся перед ним, Его благодать близка, и Его рука всегда рядом, чтобы нас поддержать и спасти».

Перед вами сборник изречений, избранных из опубликованных бесед старца Эмилиана, представляющий собой своего рода путеводитель и руководство для самопознания, обретения трезвения и восхождения по лестнице добродетелей. Антология составлена в соответствии с насущными вопросами духовной жизни, которые встают перед каждым христианином. Вы найдете в ней советы старца о том, как подвизаться, живя в обществе и браке, как идти по пути монашества.

Ощущение живого диалога вопросов читателя и ответов старца – важное достоинство этой книги. Подобно всем святым и всем современным старцам Святой Горы, у старца Эмилиана нет «своего» учения, он говорит от предания Церкви, передавая благодатный опыт, который стяжал своим духовным подвигом и выразил в живоносном слове, ведущем человека к Богу.

То, что старец Эмилиан говорит от всей полноты предания Православия, подчеркнуто в замечательном оформлении книги – в разнообразии изображений греческих, сербских и русских храмов и монастырей, во множестве икон и жизненных фотографий лиц русских монахов и простых верующих, сопровождающих текст и дополняющих восприятие каждого раздела книги. Сказанное старцем на греческом языке благодатное слово найдет живой отклик в сердце русского читателя и поможет ему ощутить присутствие Бога в своей жизни.

Dès les premières pages, l 'Archimandrite Aimilianos saisit votre main et vous entraîne des « cornes de l'autel » jusqu'au pied de la Croix, et de la Pentecôte à la création du monde, alors que le Saint-Esprit planait sur les eaux. Tout en commentant l'Ancien Testament, le saint Géronda empoigne le manteau des prophètes. Alors une clarté divine se glisse entre les pages : les bûchers des holocaustes s'éteignent, les flots de sang se tarissent et, petit à petit, le voile opaque des prophéties se soulève. Слово о трезвеноумљу се на свеобухватан начин бави готово свим главним темама подвижништва и мистичног богословља, и на тај начин представља сигуран и поуздан водич за живот унутрашње молитве. Истовремено, Свети Исихије пише једноставним и привлачним стилом који обилује живим сликама. Он је писао за монахе, а усмене поуке оца Емилијана на Слово о трезвеноумљу су исто тако упућене монасима. Међутим, и они који живе „у свету“, пошто тумач и сам на томе настоји, могу извући поуке из речи Светог Исихија, јер су оне упућене „свакој души... а Бог је све нас људе позвао на царску свадбу“. Свети Исихије сматра да је трезвеноумље делање које обухвата сваку врлину, сваку Господњу заповест. Сагласно речима оца Емилијана, трезвеноумље треба схватити као „стражење над срцем и умом... стражење над самим собом“, а његов плод су заједница са Христом и Духом Светим.

Așteptarea Lui Dumnezeu

Dumnezeu ca să suprime păcatul, i-a făcut omului câteva daruri, pentru a-l face capabil să lepede păcatul. Unul dintre cele mai importante dintre aceste daruri este boala. Boala este un semn care

mă unește cu Dumnezeu, dar eu, când mă îndeletnicesc cu boala mea, această îndeletnicire devine o uitare a adevăratului Dumnezeu. Boala ne va pândi întotdeauna , însă trebuie să o vedem ca niște copii ai lui Dumnezeu, și nu ca niște oameni ai acestei lumi.

Trebuie să se sfârșească aceasta viață lipsită de har, în care stăpânește demonul, să treacă lumea și să vină harul lui Dumnezeu, ca să vină ceea ce este veșnic, nestricăcios. Adică prelungirea acestei vieți este

din lumea aceasta, în timp ce sfârșitul este lucru firesc și înalță la ceea ce este suprafiresc, întrucât face

să înceteze ori ce stricăciune și deșertăciune, ne unește cu Însuși Dumnezeu și ne introduce în cămara Mirelui ceresc, unde nu există nici durere, nici întristare, nici suspin.

De aceea, cel mai bun lucru pe care îl avem de făcut este, mai întâi, să iubim acea ultimă clipă a vieții noastre, pentru că va clipa în care vom întâlni lucru după care am tânjit întreaga noastă viață, adică iubirea.

По словам архимандрита Эмилиана Симонопетрита: «Ты трезвишься? – Значит, с тобою Христос».

Если кто-то смотрит на меня с любовью, а я отвернулся и не обращаю на него внимания, то он не может высказать свою любовь ко мне. Остановившись, он терпеливо ждет, когда я повернусь к нему со вниманием, чтобы заговорить со мной. Так Дух Святой терпит нас порой всю нашу жизнь, ожидая, что мы обратим к Нему свой внутренний взор, очи сердца, начнем молитву и обретем способность духовного общения во внимании. Такое духовное внимание и внутреннее общение с Богом святые отцы именуют трезвением. Оно соединяет нас с Богом и с ближним в радости и мире.

Умение внутреннего трезвения, духовного общения и молитвы, необходимо всем, поскольку отъединившись от Бога и ближнего человек становится бесплоден, но для монахов приобщение таинству Богообщения – призвание, духовное художества и духовная битва. Искусство трезвения обретается в монашеском общежитии, уединяясь в пустыню монах остается в общении с Богом и всей Церковью.

Перед вами издание бесед архимандрита Эмилиана Симонопетрита с братией своего монастыря о поучениях книги «Слово о трезвении и молитве» преподобного Исихия Иерусалимского. Духовный опыт подвижника древности осмысливается в речи святого подвижника наших дней так, что сокровенные его глубины становятся близки, понятны и насущны исканиям нашего современника. Указывая на связь сердечного внимания с возможностью общения с Богом и ближним, старец Эмилиан раскрывает суть подвига внутреннего трезвения, без которого нет духовной жизни, не возможно выстроить монашескую общину или семью.
